Jamie Allen - Cypress Orchestra
Serving as the conductor of CTYO's most experienced orchestra, Cypress, Jamie holds the position as Director of Education for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He is an accomplished pianist and harpist, as well as an award-winning composer. After 4 years of experience conducting and composing in Los Angeles for a wide range of film and video projects, Jamie was the founding director of the Santa Fe New Music Youth Ensemble and Young Composers Project. In addition to serving four years as the conductor of family concerts for 20th Century Unlimited, Jamie has ten years experience as a music teacher at the elementary school level and ten years experience teaching music in various higher education settings. Jamie holds degrees from the University of Chicago (where he studied composition with Ralph Shapey, orchestration with Shulamit Ran, and conducting with Barbara Schubert), the University of Texas at Austin (where he studied orchestration with Donald Grantham, and composition & conducting with Eugene Kurtz), and holds an artist certificate from the Sorbonne in Paris. After serving five years as artist-in-residence with the Santa Fe Opera, Jamie relocated to the North Texas area where he spent 2 years directing chamber operas and educational performances for The Dallas Opera (including a performance of his own work, The Dragon Awakes). He lives in McKinney with his wife Toni (who maintains a private piano studio) and their children.
